The main motorway of Apulia is the A-14 which skirts Foggia and Bari and ends at a few kilometres before Taranto. The Naples-Canosa A-16 motorway, which meets the A-14 at Canosa, is the main artery for the Southern Tyrrhenian sea areas.

An efficient network of state highways and freeways links the provincial capitals, thus giving easy access to the inner towns and villages. To reach Alberobello from Bari we suggest driving along the SS 100 highway towards Taranto.

Near Casamassima turn right in the Turi-Putignano direction, take the SS 172, then proceed towards Alberobello. Once you reach the Capital of Trulli, you can proceed for Locorotondo and then for Martina Franca. From there you can take the provincial highway SP61, direction Cisternino, and proceed on SP61 to Ceglie Messapica.

If you want to go from Bari directly to Cisternino or Ceglie Messapica, it is preferable to take the SS16, direction Brinidisi-Lecce and, immediately after the junction for Fasano, leave the SS16 and continue on the SP1BIS in the direction of Cisternino-Ostuni; after about 4 km. turn right towards Cisternino, taking the SP9. Once you arrive in Cisternino go on towards Ceglie Messapica by taking the SP16.

From Brindisi, the road is always the SS 16, but the junction is Torre Canne – Cisternino Stazione FS, travelling along the SP7, on to Cisternino by taking the SP9 and then SP16 to Ceglie Messapica.

Coming from Sicily or Calabria, once you reach Taranto you must take the SS172 in the direction of Martina Franca; from there you can decide to proceed to Locorotondo and Alberobello or take SP01 for Cisternino and then SP16 towards Ceglie Messapica.

BY TRAIN

Apulia is linked to the rest of the country by direct railway connections to all the chief Italian cities.

Foggia-Bari-Brindisi-Lecce railway is the main railroad, and is the “end piece” of the Adriatic railroad Milan-Bologna-Ancona-Bari.

Within the region the main Ferrovie dello Stato railroad nodes are: Bari Centrale-Brindisi-Lecce and Bari Centrale-Gioia del Colle-Taranto.

Bari can be reached from Milano Centrale by Eurostar train in about eight hours, while from Roma Termini the trip in Eurostar is about four hours long.

Where there are no Ferrovie dello Stato trains, the hinterland is well connected by numerous other companies offering rail and road services which reach practically every corner of the region.

Ferrovie del Sud Est, covering 473 km. in the provinces of Bari, Taranto, Brindisi and Lecce with six main lines crossing the region from North to South, link the regional capital Bari to Lecce and Taranto and along the route you can stop at Conversano, Castellana Grotte (with its grottos), Putignano, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino and Ceglie Messapica.
